Composition 100

The hundredth series in an ongoing series of series. Unique pen-plotter drawings in which a deterministic system turns recorded hand gestures into planes of dots, rendering a perceptual experience the system itself cannot have.

Composition #100 (2026) is the hundredth series in an ongoing series of series using recorded mouse movements as raw material for plotter drawings. The series consists of unique pieces drawn in various inks on HahnemΓΌhle paper.
Each piece is seeded by polylines sourced from a personal archive of cursor recordings accumulated over more than a decade. These are not authored drawings but passive marks - gestures captured during ordinary computer use, classified by entropy, treated as samples of human motion rather than expressive intent. The archive functions as an entropy source in place of pseudo-randomness: where most generative systems rely on a deterministic random number generator, this one is seeded by the human body.
From those polylines, a deterministic pipeline performs an operation related to what Kandinsky named in 1926: "Punkt und Linie zu FlΓ€che." A symmetric fan of parallel offset curves expands outward from each path; each curve is resampled at fixed arc-length intervals; a nearest-neighbor algorithm circle-packs the resulting positions into a dense field of evenly spaced dots at a varied pitch. Where two paths' fans overlap, rejected dots colour the surviving ones, producing chromatic bleeding instead of hard boundaries.
A neighbourhood-vote step downscales the dot field with a strategy that introduces aliasing rather than smoothing - a method that keeps complex images distinguishable at small sizes. Working with the small renders on screen, I had the feeling of standing far from large works rather than close to small ones. The system that produced the work cannot have this experience.
The custom software that generates plotter instructions produces perfect renderings. The plotted drawing is unrepeatable - pens run dry, machines break and need maintenance - and each sheet is its own record. The series comprises A1 and A3 sheets, plotted on HP DraftMaster and HP 7550 respectively, each taking multiple days to plot and containing several million dots.
